Dettol is a popular name among Indians. Hearing the name Dettol creates a feeling of trust among Indians. Many homes utilize Dettol soap on a daily basis. Is Dettol soap really suitable for daily use? Can it really kill 99.99% of germs? What is the real truth behind it? Let’s know everything through this post; each ingredient will be discussed in detail.

Ingredients Analysis (As per packaging)

1. Aqua (Water)

Used as a solvent. Harmless and essential.

2. Sodium Palmate & Sodium Palm Kernelate

Sodium Palmate & Sodium Palm Kernelate is salts of fatty acids from palm oil and palm kernel oil. Not harmful to skin directly, but not eco-friendly. Generally used as cleansing agents.

3. Parfum (Fragrance)

Fragrance makes you smell good. Fragrance can contain undisclosed synthetic chemicals, not transparent.

4. Talc

Talc gives the soap a smooth and silky feel, making it more pleasant to use.

5. Sodium Chloride (Salt)

Sodium chloride known as common salt, used to enhance texture, stability, and antibacterial properties of soap.

6. Etidronic Acid & Tetrasodium EDTA

Etidronic Acid and Tetrasodium EDTA primarily used as chelating agents, soap can provide a more consistent and effective clean, even in hard water, and maintain its quality and fragrance for longer periods. 

Can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals and also not biodegradable.

7. Climbazole

Climbazole is used as antifungal agent in Dettol soap. It’s helps to inhibits growth of fungi on the skin.

Due to it being a synthetic chemical, it may cause irritation with long-term use.

8. Disodium Etidronate

Disodium Etidronate acts as a chelating agent, improves shelf life. May cause skin or eye irritation in some people.

9. Glycerin

Glycerinhelping to keeps skin moisturized.

10. Limonene

Naturally derived from citrus.

11. CI 21100, CI 11680, CI 12490 (Colorants)

Synthetic colors, use to give soap an attractive color. It can cause allergic.

TFM (Total Fatty Matter)

TFM 76% means –

• A Grade 1 toilet soap (highest quality category under BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).
• Has good cleansing ability.

Dettol Soap pH Level

9–10.5 (Alkaline)

• This high pH makes Dettol soap stronger to kill bacteria and viruses—part of how Dettol delivers its germ protection.
• It gives the soap a stronger cleansing ability.

Common pH range is slightly acidic (4.5 to 5.5) of a healthy skin. This acidic layer protects our skin against pollution, bacteria and moisture loss.

If we use soap-like alkaline (pH > 7), it can strip natural oil in the skin, cause dryness or skin problems, and disrupt the skin’s protective barrier.

(pH 4.5 – 6) ~ Ideal for Face soap ………………. pH paper like Yellow.

(pH 5 – 6) ~ it’s ok for body soap……………………pH paper like light Yellow.

Toilet soap or Bathing soap?

Yes, Dettol Original Soap is classified as a toilet soap, and not an ideal bathing soap for daily use.

Why it is a Toilet Soap

• TFM (Total Fatty Matter): 76% (≥60%), A Grade 1 toilet soap (highest quality category under BIS).
• Higher cleansing power – more effective at removing dirt/oil.

Why it’s Not Ideal as a Daily Bathing Soap

• High pH (9–10.5) – not ideal for skin.
• Synthetic fragrance and color – not ideal for sensitive skin can create irritation.
• Skin can be drying or harsh for daily use.

Pros and Cons

Pros

• No Triclosan or TCC type harmful chemicals.
• Glycerin provides moisture.
• kills germs effectively.

Cons

• High pH (9-10.5) – Not skin-friendly. it can strip natural oil in the skin, cause dryness.
• Contains synthetic fragrance & colorants.
• TFM (76%) – make it A Grade 1 toilet soap.
• EDTA, which are not biodegradable.
• Not ideal for daily use as a regular bathing soap, especially for children, elderly, or sensitive skin.

Final Verdict

After discussing all the above, it can be concluded that Dettol soap is not suitable for daily use. We can use it as toilet soap or occasional use when high germ protection is needed (e.g., after returning from public places, illness).

Tips

Before buying must read the ingredients list, avoid harmful chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate, fragrance, triclosan, parabens, artificial fragrances etc. and choose pH range is slightly acidic (4.5 to 5.5) of a healthy skin.
